Workers Ride Report: Michael's Report
This ride starts near Cutsforth's Thriftway in Canby. The first 25 miles are comprised of a somewhat strenuous series of drainage crossings -- not mere rollers, but not mountain passes, either. You start climbing upon leaving town, up the gradually steepening Township Road, down Carus and Casto Roads, then up to Spangler Road, and so on, across the drainages of Beaver Creek and other waterways that flow into the Mollala, Clackamas, and Willamette Rivers. You'll crest Redland Road just past Viola, and from there it's downhill all the way to your first control, Estacada.
Just as with the Timothy 200, the route leaves Estacada on OR 224, then takes Faraday Road for 5 miles before rejoining 224 near Promontory Park. For this ride, you then stay on 224 until Detroit Lake, 70 miles from Estacada, where you'll get your first chance to refuel. OR 224 (which becomes NFD 46) goes uphill steadily for river grade for much of its length, but really starts climbing over the last few miles before the summit. The descent down to Detroit along the Breitunbush River is fast and twisty at the top.
From Detroit, you'll travel around the reservoir, then down along the Santiam River to Gates, where you'll cut over to backroads that take you through Gates, Mill City, and Lyons to Stayton. This section should be mostly familiar to veterans of the Hot Springs & Dunes 600k. From Stayton, the route turns north to Sublimity, and then climbs back into the foothills of the Cascades to make the trip up to Silver Falls State Park. There will be a control staffed by Oregon Randonneurs volunteers in the park.
After a short climb up out of the park, you're rewarded with a long and fast descent into Silverton. Once you're through town, the route joins the familiar Meridian Road to take you north over fast and flat terrain across Elliott Prairie. At the north end of Meridian, a couple of turns brings you back to the final control at Canby.
A back-of-the-envelope calculation shows cumulative elevation gain to be about 13000 feet.
You may wish to review the Map and Cue sheet in XLS.
All riders should be familiar with and abide by rider expectations.
