Couldn’t do the Rocky Mountain 1200 this year? Still want a brevet with dramatic mountain scenery and big climbs and descents? Have we got the ride for you! Come to Bend for the inaugural Cascade Lakes 200 on September 6. This is the highest brevet in Oregon: starting elevation is 3500 ft, and it tops out at 6400, with about 7000’ of cumulative elevation gain. Along the way, you’ll be riding thru pine forests and along the upper reaches of the Deschutes River, with views of Mt. Bachelor, the Three Sisters and Broken top, among others. And it ends with a 15 mile descent back into Bend. How can you beat that?
Leaving Bend on the Cascade Lakes highway, you’ll climb for about 15 miles toward Mt Bachelor. A quick downhill takes you to the Sunriver cutoff for more downhill to (you guessed it) Sunriver. It’s flat from there to LaPine, followed by rolling hills to Crane Prairie Resort and rejoining the Cascade Lakes Highway. From there it’s rolling uphill to Sparks Lake, where the last big climb of the day takes you to the Mt Bachelor ski area. From there, it’s all downhill, except for the parts that aren’t (one “short” – 1.5 mile? – climb and some flat stuff).
Cumulative elevation gain to be about 7000 feet.
